Pokemon Ultra Moon takes players back to the sunny Alola region with a fresh twist on the story first told in Pokemon Moon. You play as a young trainer who has just moved to the islands, picks a first partner between Rowlet, Litten and Popplio, and sets out on the island challenge. This time the mysterious Ultra Beasts and the light stealing Necrozma sit at the heart of the plot, giving familiar places a stranger and more dramatic edge.

Instead of gyms, Alola tests trainers with trials led by captains and powerful Totem Pokemon that call allies into battle. Z Moves add huge flair to fights, and this version adds new areas like the Ultra Megalopolis plus the fun of Mantine surfing between islands. The Pokedex is larger, the side activities are richer and Team Rainbow Rocket arrives late in the game with villains that long time fans will recognise at once. It is a generous and polished farewell to the series on this system.

There is one important catch for new players today. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible on the system. The honest way to play now is a physical cartridge sourced through a retailer, ideally one tested and in clean condition. Anyone who bought the game digitally before the closure can still access their purchased games as normal.
