Donkey Kong Country for Nintendo 3DS

About Donkey Kong Country for Nintendo 3DS

Donkey Kong Country is the landmark platform game that turned Donkey Kong into a hero. When the Kremlings steal his banana hoard, DK teams up with Diddy Kong and crosses jungles, caves, factories and icy peaks to take it back. On Nintendo 3DS the game arrived through the Virtual Console for New Nintendo 3DS systems, letting a new generation play the Super Nintendo classic in portable form with its famous pre rendered look intact.

The platforming is tight and generous with ideas. One stage races through the treetops in a barrel cannon chain, the next dives underwater with Enguarde the swordfish, and mine cart rides remain pure joy. Animal buddies like Rambi the rhino smash open secrets, and nearly every level hides bonus rooms for players who search carefully. The difficulty climbs fairly toward a showdown with King K Rool, and the soundtrack by David Wise is still counted among the finest in games. Bonus rooms reward the most curious jumpers generously.

Banana hunters have a simple path to this classic today. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases of the Virtual Console version are no longer possible. Players who bought it before the closure can still access their purchased games on their New Nintendo 3DS. Physical Super Nintendo cartridges and other official collections also keep the game in circulation for collectors who want it on a shelf.

A timeless jungle adventure that defined a genre.
