Shantae and the Pirate's Curse joins the half genie hero after she has lost her magic, just as her old enemy Risky Boots arrives with a warning. The Pirate Master, the long dead captain of Risky, is returning, and only his scattered dark magic can stop him. Shantae must collect that magic before it corrupts Sequin Land. With no genie powers, she turns to pirate gear and an uneasy alliance with the very pirate who usually causes her trouble.

Instead of transformations, Shantae masters pirate tools: a flintlock pistol for distant switches, a cannon for extra jumps, a scimitar for cutting through blocks and boots for blazing dashes. Islands open up as your gear grows, in classic exploration fashion, with dungeons hiding both treasure and story. The writing is funny and warm, the sprites are gorgeous, and the adventure moves at a brisk pace from island to island. Many fans call this the finest entry in the series. Younger players can enjoy the surface fun while older fans dig into the deeper systems hiding underneath it all.
