Pokemon Shuffle takes the match three puzzle and fills it with Pokemon. Each stage presents a wild Pokemon at the top of the screen and a grid of Pokemon icons below it. Swap icons to line up three or more of a kind and your matches deal damage, with type matchups deciding how hard each hit lands. Beat the target within the move limit and you earn a chance to catch it, with better performances raising your odds. It began as a free to start game, easy for anyone to pick up for a few stages at a time.

The strategy lives in your team choices and your combos. Bringing super effective Pokemon, triggering their special abilities and planning swaps that chain into extra matches can turn a failing stage around. Expert stages hide rare and powerful Pokemon behind strict time limits, while special event stages rotated regularly with new challenges and prizes. Mega Evolution adds another layer, clearing chunks of the board when its gauge fills. With hundreds of stages and Pokemon to collect, Shuffle quietly became one of the longest lived puzzle companions on the system.

There is an honest catch for new players. Pokemon Shuffle was sold as a digital release, and the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible. With no cartridge edition to hunt for, the game now lives on the systems of the people who bought it in time, since they can still access their purchased games whenever they wish.
