Pokemon Blue Version is one of the two games that started a worldwide phenomenon, and this release brought the original Game Boy adventure to Nintendo 3DS through Virtual Console. You leave Pallet Town with a partner Pokemon chosen from Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, then travel the Kanto region catching creatures, battling Gym Leaders and chasing the champion's title. Team Rocket plots in the shadows, your rival races you at every turn and one hundred fifty one Pokemon wait to be found. The charm of the original presentation remains completely intact.

Playing it today is like opening a time capsule. The black and green visuals, the chiptune music and the simple battle system all come from a bolder, simpler era of role playing games, and they still work beautifully. The Virtual Console release restored the trading and battling features between systems using local wireless, so friends could still swap version exclusive Pokemon and complete the Pokedex together. Save states through the Virtual Console menu make the journey a little friendlier. Few games carry this much history, and Kanto still earns its legend honestly.

On Nintendo 3DS, this classic arrived as a digital release, and that door has now shut. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible.
