Pictlogica Final Fantasy for Nintendo 3DS

About Pictlogica Final Fantasy for Nintendo 3DS

Pictlogica Final Fantasy takes the heroes, villains and monsters of the Final Fantasy series and rebuilds them as picture logic puzzles. Each stage hides a character or creature inside a grid of numbers, and solving the puzzle reveals the pixel art portrait waiting underneath. Between puzzles, the characters you uncover join your party for simple battles, giving the solving a purpose beyond the picture itself. It is a gentle crossover between two very different pleasures: the calm focus of logic puzzling and the charm of a beloved role playing world full of familiar faces.

Solving follows Picross rules, with clues marking the filled squares in every row and column, but the presentation dresses everything in Final Fantasy flavor. Puzzles come in different sizes, characters bring their own abilities to the battle sections and quests chain the stages together into a light adventure. The touch screen suits the marking and filling work well, and the pixel portraits are lovingly drawn tributes to decades of series art. This version was offered in Japan, making it a curiosity for import minded fans.

Buying Pictlogica Final Fantasy fresh today is, sadly, no longer an option. It was a digital only release, and the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, ending new digital purchases for good. There is no physical cartridge edition either. The players who bought it before the closure can still access their purchased games on their own systems, and they are the lucky keepers of this one now.

Two classic pleasures, blended with real affection.
