The brothers are invited to Piillo Island, a resort with a sleepy past and a very wide awake problem. Princess Peach is pulled into the dream world by Antasma, a bat like villain who has teamed up with Bowser. Luigi turns out to be the key to everything, because sleeping on special pillows opens portals into his dreams. Mario must jump between the real island and Luigi dreams to free the trapped Piillo folk.

Inside dreams, Mario works with Dreamy Luigi, who can multiply into a Luiginoid crowd, reshape himself into tools and even grow giant for huge boss battles. Real world battles keep the series timing based style, with jumps, hammers and Bros attacks that reward practice. The contrast between the calm island and the surreal dream stages keeps every hour feeling different. It is one of the biggest and most inventive entries in the whole Mario and Luigi series.

Dream Team was a major 3DS release, so boxed copies are still around. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, meaning new digital purchases are no longer possible.
