Steel Empire is a steampunk shooter set in a world of coal, steel and mighty airships. The Motorhead Empire has conquered the skies with its armoured fleets, and a lone pilot of the Republic takes off in an experimental aircraft to fight back. Giant flying battleships, armoured trains and mechanical fortresses fill the screen, all drawn in a rich brass and iron style. This Nintendo 3DS version rebuilds the much loved classic for a new audience, keeping the dramatic story scenes and the heroic mood that made the original a favourite among shooter fans.

You pilot one of two aircraft, a nimble plane or a sturdy zeppelin, through seven stages of side scrolling action. Power ups strengthen your shot, lightning bombs clear desperate moments, and every stage ends with a screen filling boss, from flying fortresses to a huge armoured train that must be dismantled piece by piece. The remake adds a friendlier difficulty curve, practise options and score chasing for players who want to master each stage. It respects the classic while smoothing its rough edges, which makes it a fine entry point into old school shooting.
