Sonic Toon Island Adventure is the Japanese title of the game known in the west as Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal. The Sonic Toon cast, as the Boom versions are called in Japan, face the ancient villain Lyric, who kidnaps Amy while hunting for a lost crystal of great power. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Sticks cross a chain of islands to rescue their friend, swapping jokes and using teamwork the whole way. The lighter cartoon tone of the Boom line carries this handheld chapter from start to finish.

Gameplay in this edition matches the western release, favoring exploring over pure speed. Islands hold branching levels with hidden rooms, crystal shards and upgrade materials for careful players. Each hero matters, since Sticks throws a guided boomerang, Knuckles digs and climbs and Tails flies and uses gadgets, and swapping between them opens the way forward. The enerbeam tool ties the team together for swinging and pulling puzzles. It is a Sonic adventure that rewards patience and curiosity in equal measure.
