Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball for Nintendo 3DS

About Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball for Nintendo 3DS

Rusty's Real Deal Baseball is one of Nintendo's strangest and sweetest experiments. Rusty Slugger, a retired baseball star and dog, runs a sports shop that is failing badly, and his family life is not much better. You play his only loyal customer, taking on baseball themed mini games while Rusty unloads his troubles between rounds. The blend of sports action and gentle story about a sad old dog gives the game a personality like nothing else on the system.

The mini games cover batting, pitching, catching and quick reflex challenges, all controlled simply and scored generously. Doing well earns stickers and discounts, and the famous twist was haggling: you could negotiate the real price of each mini game pack with Rusty, offering items and compliments to wear him down. His reactions change with your choices, making shopping itself a game. It is funny, warm and quietly sad in places, which is a remarkable mix for a baseball title.

Rusty's shop tells the closure story with feeling. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible, and his haggling days are over. There is no cartridge edition to fall back on. Customers who bought his mini games before the closure can still access their purchased games, so Rusty's shop stays open for the loyal fans who supported it in time.

No other sports game has this much heart.
