New Super Mario Bros. 2 turns the famous platform series into a joyful hunt for gold. Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach again, but this time every level sparkles with coins. They pour from blocks, trail behind enemies and hide in every corner, and the game keeps a running total of every coin you collect across all modes. The dream target is one million coins, which gives even familiar grasslands and castles a fresh purpose. It is Mario with a treasure hunter heart.

The running and jumping feel exactly as fans expect, crisp and responsive. New tricks push the coin chase further. The Gold Flower turns blocks and enemies into coins, a coin block hat rewards you for sprinting, and golden enemies leave rich trails behind them. Coin Rush mode packs three levels into a fast time trial where each coin adds precious seconds. Two players can also tackle the whole adventure together on linked systems, racing for coins while helping and teasing each other.

Collectors still have a clear path to this one. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible. Owners who bought the game digitally before the closure can still access their purchased games, so early buyers lose nothing they already paid for.
