Nano Assault EX shrinks the shooter down to a microscopic world. A deadly virus is spreading through the human body, and you pilot a tiny fighter through cells and organs to destroy the infection at its source. Each stage is a living landscape of membranes, tunnels and strange growths, rendered in bright detail that really shows off the system's 3D effect. The EX edition expands the original release with extra modes and sharper controls, turning a good looking shooter into one of the most polished action games of the systems early years.

Combat comes in two flavors. Some stages play as fast twin stick arena shooting on the surface of a cell, with enemies swarming from every side, while others become rail shooting flights through tunnels and arteries. Upgrades improve your weapons between stages, and boss creatures guard the end of each region with patterns that demand both dodging and accurate fire.

A quick note on buying it today. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible for this or any other title on the system. Look for a physical cartridge from a retailer instead. The expanded EX edition was a digital release, while the original version had a cartridge, so careful shoppers should check exactly which edition a listing offers. If you bought it digitally before the closure, you can still access your purchased games as before.
