Donkey Kong Country Returns revived the series after a long rest, bringing Donkey Kong and Diddy back for a brand new island adventure. The Tiki Tak Tribe has hypnotized the islands animals and stolen the banana hoard, so the Kongs charge through jungles, beaches, caves and factories to set things right. The game honors the Super Nintendo classics while moving at a faster, bouncier pace, with levels that constantly throw new ideas at you.

DK feels powerful here. He pounds the ground to stun enemies and reveal secrets, blows out flames and rolls through whole lines of foes. Diddy rides on his back and adds a helpful jetpack hover that softens tricky landings. The stage variety is superb, mixing classic running and jumping with rocket barrel flights, mine cart chases and gorgeous silhouette levels lit by sunset. It is a demanding game, but fair checkpoints and pure energy carry you through. Sunset silhouette stages are pure visual poetry in motion.
