Cave Story is the beloved independent platformer created largely by one man, Daisuke Amaya. You wake as a silent robot soldier in a cave on a floating island, with no memory of how you arrived. The island rabbit like Mimiga are being hunted by a cruel Doctor who wants an army, and a cursed crown sits at the center of the danger. What begins as a quiet escape grows into a rich story about friendship, sacrifice and free will. Its pixel art and music have inspired countless games since.

The gunplay has a clever twist. Your weapons gain experience from fallen crystals and level up into stronger forms, but taking damage knocks them back down, so careful play is rewarded twice. Weapons range from the trusty Polar Star to the wild Bubbler and the mighty Spur. Jetpack boosts, hidden items and secret rooms fill the island, and choices you make change events and even the ending. Multiple endings, including a famously hard secret one, give this compact adventure remarkable depth and replay value.

This indie landmark is now a physical find on the system. The Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS closed in March 2023, so new digital purchases are no longer possible. The honest way to play now is a physical cartridge from a retailer, and a boxed enhanced edition was sold for the system. Players who bought the game digitally before the closure can still access their purchased games on their system. The game also lives on many other systems for new fans.

It is a small masterpiece that changed indie games forever.
